The court in UAE has declared that a man can exercise his ‘right to discipline’ against his wife and children. I know most of you must be thinking ‘what is the right to discipline’!

Right to Discipline- A man can beat his wife and children as long as he leaves no ‘visible’ marks on their body.¬† Children who have attained ‘adulthood’ or ‘puberty’ cannot be struck (does it make a difference?)

I was shocked and this lead me to read the laws and rules related to the culture and religion.

Few steps mention to control the ‘rebellious’ wife:

  • admonish them: The husband is to verbally admonish her
  • send them to beds apart: If that fails the husband is to sexually desert his wife
  • beat them: If both measures above fail the husband is commanded to beat his wife
  • (ref: http://www.answering-islam.org/Silas/wife-beating.htm)
  • I do respect the culture and religion of every country but what i cannot understand is that in what way are women inferior than men?Why is that a woman who asks questions or demands her rights is considered ‘rebellious’? Is education the only way to free women?
